KAHLA Porcelain receives 66th design award

“Diamonds & Pearls“ has been awarded the Good Design Award Japan

For German porcelain manufacturer KAHLA/Thüringen Porzellan GmbH its 66th design award is a special one, as the “Good Design Award Japan“ is also known as the Oscar of  international design. KAHLA has received the award for its porcelain collection “Diamonds & Pearls” (design B. Schmidt, M. Rissanen), which was introduced in spring 2008. The collection, that has already won the German design award “Form”, is marked by a special base structure showing an innovative transparent relief. KAHLA takes pride in winning their fifth prestigious “Good Design Award Japan”. The company’s collection “Elixyr” which was also designed by KAHLA’s designer Barbara Schmidt was able to convince the international jury in 2005.

“Given Asia’s long porcelain tradition and Japan’s high quality criteria, the Japanese jury’s award is a special honour for KAHLA”, says marketing manager Jutta Burkhart. Since 1957 the “Good Design Award Japan” (G-Mark) is an official rating system supplying designs that build up a connection to the lifestyle of future generations. For several years now, KAHLA has won over Japanese clients with their innovative gift items and its modern, multifunctional design collection.

To create elements that connect different generations and cultures was the aim of KAHLA’s designers Barbara Schmidt and her Finnish colleague Mirjami Rissanen. The result was the ten-part porcelain series “Diamonds & Pearls” which is especially designed for the demands of international food and beverage. It consists of two elements:

Diamonds (design: B. Schmidt) is reminiscent of natural crystals that are slightly irregular. The plates and bowls have a crystal structured base which projects its image upon the surface of the porcelain. This display is particularly striking in contrast with modern culinary creations.

Pearls (design: M. Rissanen) is marked by organic forms that are indicative of scallop shells cradling their pearls inside. The bowls were designed for tea and soup. They are characterised by a collar which offers a surface to touch or to stage cuisine. The set of bowls is completed by a small teapot with an elegant handle and a diminutive bowl for canapés, desserts or snacks.

As true jewels for the table, Diamonds & Pearls is perfect for every-day use or a stylish soirée. The bowls and plates can be used for any kind of meal or appetizer, either on their own, combined with each other or with pieces from other flattering KAHLA porcelain collections. KAHLA removes the barriers of traditional uniformity, stimulating the senses and allowing freedom of expression.

For the porcelain collection “OPUS” (design: speziell®) KAHLA has recently won its 64th and 65th design award. Experts from the hotel, restaurant and catering sector awarded the architectonic shape “OPUS” the “Top Hotel Star Award” and the “Catering Star”.
