Porcelain collection Update by KAHLA – 10 years up to date

In 1998, the German porcelain manufacturer KAHLA initiated a small revolution in retail: With its innovative form Update by designer Barbara Schmidt KAHLA introduced a porcelain collection which no longer ignored the evolution of dining culture, but transferred it for the first time to porcelain. KAHLA was rewarded for its courage to create a porcelain collection without coffee pot and sugar bowl. Now celebrating its 10th anniversary, Update still convinces with few but multifunctional articles allowing unique combinations.

It started with a bowl, then a plate which can be used as saucer or lid. A bowl, plates in several sizes, a mug and a baking dish – these eight pieces made up the Update basic set – a multifunctional set for small kitchens or single households. Gradually, the programme grew with more bowls, a pasta plate, a mug with a handle, snack plates, baking dishes, a spoon and a chopstick rest. This range offers many possibilities to create a very personal porcelain set which can be updated again and again as life changes. Expansion and change are typical concepts in modern life – coffee pots, terrines and gravy boats no longer fit into today’s lifestyle.

Few, but multifunctional articles designed as a universal form, beautiful, long-living and affordable – this is how KAHLA wanted to transfer the 18th century tradition of tabletop, a set of matching dishes, to the present. The result was a porcelain collection that suits its user’s way of life allowing pleasure and well-being at the table.

Update by KAHLA – design, value and 7 international design awards.
