Whiteness At KAHLA, only hard paste porcelain is produced. This is the whitest type of porcelain, whereas vitreous china and bone china tend towards a cream or ivory colour.
Abrasion and glaze hardness Besides the high density of the material, in comparison to other materials hard paste porcelain has the hardest, most abrasion resistant glaze. KAHLA has improved the glaze to such an extent, that its products can be described as high performance tableware. The hardness of the crack resistant and scratch resistant surface is measured on the Mohs scale: diamond = 10, hard paste porcelain = 8. Marks from cutlery on the glaze are caused by soft metals but do not damage the hard glaze and can be removed with a porcelain cleaning agent (e.g. www.etol.de).
Impact resistance At firing temperatures of 950°C during bisque firing and 1400° during glaze firing in KAHLA"s high-performance kilns, kaolin, quartz and feldspar make for the densest and hardest type of porcelain, which in spite of the thinness of the material is extremely sturdy. The hardness, fineness and density of the material allow for flexible design of the shapes. Banquet programmes also have breakage resistant rims.
Heat resistance Hard paste porcelain from KAHLA is microwave resistant, ovenproof and suitable for use in a salamander grill. Even decorated porcelain articles such as baking forms are certified ovenproof up to 280°C. However, platinum, silver and gold décors are not suitable for microwave use. Articles in hard paste porcelain are resistant to extreme fluctuations in temperature of up to 200°C.
Décor With few exceptions, KAHLA porcelain is decorated with inglaze colours and décors. At 1200°C, they sink into the glaze, permanently bonding with it. Decorated hard paste porcelain from Kahla in Thuringia is just as durable as white ware: the colours retain their brilliance permanently. The KAHLA innovation „touch“ – the world first porcelain with a velvety-soft surface coating – is 100% dishwasher safe, safe for use with food and microwave resistant. The colours of the textile material retain their brilliance permanently.
Quality control Certificates from the “Keramikinstitut” in Meissen and other certified laboratories prove that the products of KAHLA/Thüringen Porzellan GmbH meet the demanding requirements of the European and world markets in all areas. Internal quality controls are conducted at every stage of production. The quality of each article is guaranteed by manual selection in accordance with rigorous quality standards. The raw materials for porcelain manufacturing are regularly examined by external laboratories.
